Major Works:
Major Themes: Trust Fear Novel Choice Plot Summary: One of the many novels Mark Haddon wrote I chose to read, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time. The book first starts out with the main character, Christopher, finding his neighbor's dog, Wellington, dead. Christopher lives with his dad. His mom is supposedly dead. While trying to figure out who killed Wellington, he finds out his dad lied about his mom's death. Now he has trust issues with his dad and then later also finds out his dad killed Wellington. He gets scared of his dad and runs away to London to find his mom. When Christopher finds his mom he also finds she is living with some guy called Mr. Shears. Then Christopher goes back to his father's house and rebuilds his relationship. Analysis of Main Characters: Christopher: Struggles with a form of Autism. He wants to solve the mystery of the murder of who killed Wellington the dog. Ed Boone: Christopher's dad. Single dad. Killed Wellington the dog. Judy: Christophers mom. Having an affair with Mr. Shears. Mrs. Shears: “mom” to Wellington the dog. Neighbor to Christopher and Mr. Boone. Theme: The most significant theme in my book is, give trust to those who earn it. I believe this is the biggest theme because Christophers trust is tested so many times. Even his father lies to him. Not small lies, like big lies. For example he lied to Christopher about his mother being alive and about the dog’s death. How did the author’s life influence his writing in this novel? (2-3 paragraphs) In Mark Haddon's free time he spent a lot of time with people that had mental and physical disabilities. This inspired the main character in the novel. He also remembers reading mysteries when he was young. This inspired him to write many of his books. Why did he kill the dog and why did he lie about Christopher's mom?

In the book they never state why the father does any of this. It might just be because he's crazy and that is why Christopher runs away from his dad because he gets scared his dad is going to kill him.

Do you think that Christopher's dad was trying to keep Christopher to himself?

yes, I do believe this because his dad did not want Christopher to go back to his mother. I also believe he killed the dog to scare Christopher from the rest of the world.
